Are you paying attention to your life? If you find yourself coasting through life without intention, then, my friend, it’s time for a change.

Just think about it. Have you ever traveled somewhere, and the next thing you know, you’ve arrived at your destination with no recollection of the journey? Well, it’s that easy to begin to live life on autopilot.

With so many responsibilities and distractions, I’ve found myself guilty of ignoring the flashing lights in my life from time to time. The wear and tear of pushing through each day becomes more apparent with time.

When my birthday came around this year, I seized the opportunity to take inventory of my life and assess how I was really doing. I want to share some of my process with you so that you can pay attention to your life.

Get curious about your life

How are your finances? How are your relationships? How are you mentally? Physically? If you struggle to answer any of these questions, let this be your sign to get quiet. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb mode. Take a moment to step away from the noise. In my practice of journaling, occasionally, something will pour out that I didn’t know was on my heart and on my mind. And while there’s nothing like putting pen to paper, if you need to verbally process your thoughts, talk it out with someone. A trusted family member, friend, or even a therapist can step in to help you get in touch with what’s going on beneath the surface.

Embrace your full self

Is there anything that you’re keeping to yourself for fear that other people won’t accept you? The older I get, the less I try to hide my true self, but there are still moments when I have to remind myself that I am enough. I want the same for you. Even when you don’t feel like you measure up. Even when you don’t feel like you look your best. Know that all of that makes you who you are. When you embrace all that you bring to the table, you will find beauty even in the parts of you that appear to be broken.

Heal what you reveal

It just doesn’t feel good to live in hiding. There is so much more life to be lived on the other side of shame. What would happen if you challenged the things that are holding you back from truly living? I want to encourage you to invite God into your heart and abide in Him. When you bring all of your struggles to Him, you shift your focus from your problems to the possibility of a better future.

It can be tempting to slip into autopilot mode when you’re just trying to make it through each day. But there comes a time when you have to wake up and get back in the driver’s seat of your life. It’s okay if you’ve veered off course. Take the time to slow down and listen to what your life is trying to tell you. You’ll be so glad you did.
