Do you ever wonder, when you have thoughts, feelings, or some kind of knowing in your heart if that “voice” is your own or God’s? Here’s what I can tell you about listening to God. It’s like music playing in the distance. There is a melody that strikes a chord within your spirit when you hear it.

Maybe you hear that still small voice but still question, “Is that you God?”

While learning how to hear God’s voice may feel overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be because the truth is that God is always desirous of speaking to you and wants you to know His voice. There is a tune He is playing for you, a song off in the distance that He is inviting you to enjoy.

So what’s the key to knowing His voice?

The answer is relationship. You build relationship with God by drawing close to Him. And you don’t build relationship with someone without ever being with them or engaging in conversation. Developing your relationship with God is no different. You build relationship with Him by being in His Word, committing to community, connecting with Him in prayer, and following through in obedience.

Read the Word

John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Bible is God’s word to us and is a beautiful metanarrative that displays God’s love for us from beginning to end. In order to know God’s voice, you have to know what He is saying, and you learn what He is saying by immersing yourself in the words He has already given you.

Be in Community

I hear it all the time – stories of women wanting to find their community. That’s one of the reasons I created The Sister Circle. I wanted to make room for women to connect and grow in community with one another. Growth in God also involves being in fellowship with other believers, seeking guidance from trusted sources, and being authentic and transparent with others. Hebrews 10:25 encourages us not to neglect gathering together to encourage one another. Iisten girl… you need people in your corner cheering you on.

Connect in Prayer

Prayer is not only a time where you can express your thoughts to God but where you can pause and listen to Him as well. James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” When you pray, you are drawing near. You quiet your mind and all the racing thoughts to make room for God’s voice to come through. His thoughts toward you are precious and full of love – you don’t have to fear getting quiet with Him.

Walk in Obedience

Now I know “obedience” can sound like such a harsh word and can breed thoughts of legalism. Still, as you get to know God, grow in relationship with Him, and know His character, you will begin to see that following after Him in obedience leads to abundant life. His ways for you are good and lead to peace. It’s not an obedience that demands perfection, but obedience that follows a heart posture of surrender and trust.

When you begin to walk with God and follow Him in obedience, He promises to guide you and show you the way (Isaiah 30:21).

Don’t miss your moment. Don’t miss His cue. Listen for the music of your life. Live awake to the tune that God is playing for you and follow His lead. It’s time to enjoy the melody.
