Quiet time doesn’t have to be complicated. It is simply a dedicated time of connection and communication with God. How then, should quiet time actually work? You don’t have to be a Biblical scholar to have a successful quiet time. All you have to do is simply show up in anticipation for what God may want to do when you create space to be with Him.

For as long as I’ve had a quiet time, because the seasons of my life change, the structure of my quiet time has changed too. While there is no perfect, formulaic, or uniform way to have a quiet time with God, I want to share a few ways to make time to connect with God through His Word and in prayer.

Establish a time and PLACE Set a date. Find a time that works for you each day, put it on the calendar, and stick to it. Find a place free of distractions. Consider a place that would be conducive to how you connect with God. Do you believe you connect with God more when you are out in nature? Or what about in the sanctuary of your own home? If you are a mom of littles, maybe quiet time looks like the 10 minutes you have when you escape to your closet or car midday or the 30 minutes to an hour before the rest of your household wakes. Whatever the case, find a place that works for you and plan to meet with God there each day.

Present a surrendered POSTURE – Settle your mind and the ruminating thoughts that tend to arise when you prepare for time with God. Silence any noise seeking to distract you. Grab a pen and paper. Give yourself permission to set aside any distracting thoughts. Either before or during your quiet time, put any random or runaway thoughts on your paper. The wandering thoughts can wait til later, but by writing them down, you have done the work of capturing them as they arise. Brain dump any and everything that comes to mind – your list of to-do’s, grocery list items, pending deadlines, people you need to connect with – anything that pops up can be noted and reviewed after your quiet time. Give God your full attention during the time you’ve set aside for Him.

PROCESS your time in God’s Word. Choose a passage of scripture to unpack. Begin by plainly reading each verse of scripture within the passage. Next, reflect on what stood out within the passage of scripture. Highlight or underline specific words or phrases. Consider using a Study Bible or Concordance to assist you in going deeper. Allow time for pondering on and digesting what you read. How might what you read apply to your current circumstances, character, or calling?

PRAY about what God revealed to you in His Word. Use this time to acknowledge God for who He is and offer praises to Him. Be sure and offer gratitude to Him for what He has done and what you believe He is doing or can do in your life. Ask God how He might want to use His Word in and through your life. Who do you need to pray for? How might God want to grow your character? In what ways is God asking you to be obedient? Share the concerns of your heart with God and offer your prayer request to Him. Trust that He hears you, wants to connect with you, and that He desires to give His children good things.

Developing intimacy with God is a worthy investment of your time and energy. The more you know about God, the more you will discover about yourself and the plans He has for your life as you partner with Him.
