Podcast: Play in new window
What is the story that you tell about yourself? What lies are you believing? If you’re like most people, you define yourself based on your struggles, your shortcomings, and even your successes. But did you know that the story you tell about yourself—how you answer questions like “why do I matter?”—will actually determine how you live out your future as well? It is so tempting to evaluate ourselves by the standard most people use, but as followers of Christ, we are called to a very different way of thinking, and by extension, a very different way of living. Regardless of what life throws at us, whether successes or failures, we must remember that our true identity is not based on our distinct characteristics and personalities or our strengths and weaknesses, but instead on what God’s Word has to say about us—in other words, what God Himself knows to be true of us.On today’s show, I had a chat with my sister, Priscilla Shirer. Priscilla has a role in an upcoming film, Overcomer, produced by the Kendrick Brothers, which will debut on August 23, 2019. She has also just released a new book, Radiant, and a new Bible study, Defined. Overcomer, Radiant, and Defined all center on the theme of identity. Priscilla shared these words about identity in her new book:
“The culture will try to DEFINE YOU, your past may try to LABEL YOU, the enemy will seek to DECEIVE YOU, but no one has the authority to GIVE YOU YOUR NAME—your true identity—except your Father.”
It’s important not to allow our value to be wrapped up in worldly, temporal things, but instead to have it firmly rooted in the unchanging Words God has spoken over our lives. When circumstances arise that make us question our true identity, we must renew our minds in the Word and boldly and courageously declare its truths. When we know who we truly are and walk in the light of it, it will give us confidence in Him and His ability to shape and mold us into the unique, gifted, and valuable individuals He has called us to be. In Christ, we never have any reason to feel defeated or afraid.
I hope you enjoy this chat with my sister—I know I did.

Stay at his feet
I enjoyed this podcast. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, knowledge and testimonies. In addition, I’m glad you discussed the upcoming movie, The Overcomer. I didn’t know about it. Now I’m gathering friends and family for us to see it together on the opening weekend.
Hope you enjoyed the movie!
I watched this podcast on your Youtube channel and I LOVED IT! The authenticity and transparency about how you two view each other really helped me. I think people struggle with comparison more than they like to admit or talk about. But you two did it and with such love! You both were able to give and receive sincere compliments while challenging how you saw the other person’s successes. That taught me something. Comparison doesn’t have to be bitter. We can be sober minded (and in our emotions) and address it with love. Beautiful example! I’ve been inspired by your podcasts and Sister Circle interviews in many ways! Keep going !!!
(P.S. I’ve been reading Ephesians 1 in my quiet time and now I know why 🙂 )
Girl! You just said something. Comparison doesn’t have to be bitter!
I have been blessed by both you and your sister’s ministries so much. When I see either of your names pop up on Proverbs 31 devotions, it’s like having my favorite song come on the radio.
Instead of comparing you two, I think of you both like chocolate and peanut butter. Both ingredients are completely separate and have their own recipes independent of each other. But as any candy maker will tell you, when you put them together, the end result is going to be a hit.
That is delightful. Thanks so much Denyse.
Denyse, that is an awesome statement! Thank you. I’ve often wondered how they keep from comparing with one another as they are both so wonderful. Yes, chocolate and peanut butter. Each one simply amazing on her own and together … well, you said it.
Hi Chrystal!
I just wanted to say how blessed I was by this podcast! It comes at a perfect time in my life where I keep thinking that God has forgotten about me and my purpose… but,God spoke to me after listening to you both share how in seasons of doubt and seasons of “what should I do next…” finding your identity in the Lord was the whole purpose of the confusion…. Won’t he do it!
I think this year has been full of that for me and it took me the first nine months out of the twelve to finally surrender and fully understand that.. I guess better late than never. Thank you for this podcast and your obedience to ministry. God Bless!
