Have you ever found yourself wondering: What is it that makes you, you? Psalm 139:19 states that it is God who makes you who you are: he made all the delicate, inner parts of your body and knit you together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13, NLT).  But even though most of us know that truth,  we still find ourselves trying to fill a holean emptiness, an insecurityin ourselves. And that hole only widens as we continue to reject the skin we are in.

Today, I’m talking with my very good friend, Michelle. You may remember her from episodes 18 and 118 of the podcast. I even talked about “Shelly” in She’s Still There). Michelle and I have been friends a long time and I’ve had the privilege of watching the love she has for herself evolve over the years. I’ve even witnessed her learn to love parts of herself, that in the past, she didn’t love so much.

It may seem counterintuitive, but what if the part of us that we dislike the most, that we are the most insecure about is the very part of us that God wants to use? After all, God makes clear that his “power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9, ESV), and that he “chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong…what is low and despised…to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God” (1 Corinthians 1:17-29, ESV). And remember, it was Moses who God chose to speak for him, even though Moses insisted: “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent…I am slow of speech and of tongue” (Exodus 4:10). Time and time again, God has used the most unexpected and “unsuitable” people to fulfill his purposes.

We have a tendency to focus on what we think is “wrong” with us, and. We constantly seek out and celebrate in other people what we wish was true of ourselves. But how powerful would it be if we changed our perspective and decided to celebrate who God has made us and to recognize what is good?
