Podcast: Play in new window
Let’s take a look at what it means to be a girl boss! I’m talking to some of my favorite girl bosses to find out how they got started, what their everyday lives actually look like, how they make money, and how they stay healthy in the hustle.
I’m kicking off this series with a girl boss I’ve admired for awhile – Lara Casey. Lara has honestly done it all. She is the CEO of Cultivate What Matters, runs her business out of her home, employs 9 women, homeschools her oldest child, and lives full-time mom and wife life. Lara draws intentional boundaries around her time and priorities so that she can consistently grow her business AND be available to her family. I learned a lot from Lara about what it means to enjoy life because she genuinely enjoys hers, even though she has multiple irons in the fire.
Lara and I chat about her journey from musical theater in NYC to personal training to producing a wedding magazine to teaching business classes to publishing her own books. From the outside, it may look like Lara has a superpower for “getting things done” that the rest of us don’t. But Lara has done what any of us can do – determined what is most important to her and chased after it.
I learned so much from our conversation, and I know you will too!
Highlights from Today’s Episode:
- Integrating faith and business
- Working from home
- Determining how much to charge
- Knowing when to grow your business
- Tending to yourself first so you can tend to your business
Quotes:
- “It is out of the hard things that good things grow.” – Lara Casey
- “God breaks us down to build us back up new and different.” – Lara Casey
- “Life is too short not to give it a try.” – Lara Casey

Meghan Trainor’s song “No Excuses” gets me in the Girl Boss mood!
Yea… Meghan’s music gets me in a Girl Boss mood too!
Do Something by Matthew West is a rally song because it provides no excuses for the thoughts and ideas that I have any given day. The song says Do Something, Now. For every problem God has allowed me to see, He’s also provided me as part of the answer. So go on and implement that business idea.
I already have “Hello, My Name Is” on the playlist! Will have to check out Do Something!
Me, Myself and I by Beyonc’e is my Girl Boss song! When I need a more mellow tone, I Need You to Survive by Hezekiah Walker. Balance is a must in this thing called life…

This was another awesome podcast! I am a Girl Boss, and in my career I have reached the status of partner. I find it a struggle to not want to run away from the “hard stuff” and making hard decisions. There were so many great nuggets in this podcast! Thank you for the encouragement, and I am writing two phrases on notecards: ““It is out of the hard things that good things grow.” and “Life is too short not to give it a try.” There’s a Girl Boss in my community whom I greatly admire and we recently met for lunch so that I could “pick her brain.” That was a great opportunity to learn even more! Thank you for the life lessons!❤️ My Girl Boss songs – “I Choose” by India Arie, “Not the time, not the place” by Marvin Sapp, “Hate on Me” by Jill Scott, “Just Fine” by MJB, “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten
Mandisa’s “Overcomer”
I have to agree that Just Fine is my work jam. I like my girl Beckah Shea’s Life too. Get the focus & upbeat. I love her songs when I’m struggling spiritually, there’s a song for most of my issues. When I was just visualizing my ideas, my go to song was Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. That still hits the right points for me. Playlist is a great idea. Thanks
Fearless by Jasmine Murray! It’s upbeat with solid Biblical truth reminding me what God has given me, declarative, and a prayer for God’s help all in one.
I am a Girl Boss in Training. I currently work in Higher Education as an administrator but for years God has been trying to pull me in another direction. I am finally listening but it is hard work to make the transition because it is all out depend on God to make it work faith. I have more than a mustard seed so I am headed in the right direction.
My songs are: Deitrick Haddon – Love Him like I do ft. Ruben Studdard & Mary Mary and God in Me by Mary Mary
The Girl Boss song that motivates me is “The Voice of Truth”. When I am at work and trying to make many decisions quickly as employees come into my office all day long, I remember the voice of truth tells me a different story, the voice of truth says do not be afraid, the voice of truth says this is for God’s glory. So out of all the voices rattling around in my head all day long as my day moves at warp speed, I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth. It gives me courage to NOT listen to that voice that says You’ll never win. You’ll NEVER WIN!
Thank you for you website. I have been looking for a site that addresses christian current topics for women in the workplace for a long time, Susan
