Today, I chat with Mary DeMuth – a raw, genuine, and beautiful soul who has tasted deeply of pain and even deeper of redemption.

Mary shares her She’s Still There story with us, and even though she has experienced unimaginable trauma, she has emerged with a passion for healing, wholeness, and using brokenness to further God’s kingdom.

After a difficult childhood of divorce, sexual abuse, drugs, and instability, Mary remembers feeling like she only existed to be abused and neglected. But in ninth grade, Mary met Jesus at YoungLife camp, and she began finding freedom and purpose from her pain.

Mary and I talk about how our most painful stories can become our most powerful ministry, how our healing can lead others to their healing, and how sometimes discovering the girl in you means unearthing the parts of you you’d rather forget.

We tackle difficult questions like:

  • How do you practically use your story to help others with theirs?
  • What does it look like to extend forgiveness? And to keep forgiving?
  • How do we grab hold of hope when we only see brokenness?
  • What are good indicators that it may be time to seek counseling for our past?

I hope you enjoy my conversation with Mary as much as I did. She is a curator of poetic and honest words, and she is unafraid to face the hard parts of healing.

  1. Do you have a past trauma that has not been dealt with? Could it be time to let someone else in and seek help to pursue healing?
  2.  How have your relationships or the relationships around you suffered because of resisting instead of embracing a painful story?
  3. How have you seen the Lord use your story to grow His Kingdom?
  4. How can you be held accountable to be active instead of passive in your healing?
