What are you doing to lose weight?
I got that question about seven times yesterday at church.
My answer is always the same.
That’s all it is people.
But I have been guilty in the past of eating less, moving more, reaching my goal, and thenĀ gaining the weight back.
I’ve been in a fight with theĀ #fatdemonĀ for most of my life.
Surely I’m not by myself.
Losing weight has been a theme in my life…. seriously.
And if I’m honest, most of that process has had absolutely nothing to do with me being celebratory about the process.
Suffering would be a better word choice actually.
Misery may work too.
But what I’m realizing is that we start andĀ continuingĀ Ā doing things that have a positive association for us.
We do things that have something in it for us.
I’m learning that when I choose to honor and commemorate my healthy food choicesĀ in a positive way, I want to continue making those mealĀ choices. Ā The same goes for movement. If the movement that I make leaves a good taste in my mouth. Ā I want to keep doing it.
Making sustainable changes that will last you a lifetime… Isn’t that the goal with a healthy lifestyle versus a diet?
I’m finding that in order for me to start a healthy living journey and STAY on the journey (instead of turning and eating my way right back to my previous weight or more) I have to celebrate my choices by making meals and movement memorable.
So I cook with friends.
I exerciseĀ with friends.
I run with family.
There has to be something in it for me.
Today’s podcast is about celebrating meals and movementĀ – what it means, how I’m learning toĀ do it, and some practical ideas for how you can get it done.
Sure there has to be room for a piece of cake every now and then…
But celebrations don’t have to mean that we lose momentum, over do it, or lose control. (I only had one bit of cake at my sister-in-love’s birthdayĀ party… Okay… one and a half. Ā But I think I danced off the calories)
Celebrations make life memorable. This thought can apply to how we look at healthy food and fitness too!
And your healthĀ has value.
Oh…and Ā I’ve got another theme song option for you to listen to. Let me know what you think!

Thanks for sharing Chrystal! I was beating myself up from the 2 pieces of my sister’s birthday cake I ate last night. I also drink the same smoothie every morning for the same reason that you do. I also started hiking recently because I wanted to do exercise that I actually enjoyed, so it was encouraging to hear about you reading on your bike. Thanks for being so real and for inspiring me to keep going and not give up. (I tried a mini-triathlon last year and failed miserably, had to get pulled out of the bay for the swimming portion, I’m scared to try it again, but maybe one day!)
You mentioned that you are doing a modified Eat to Live program. I’ve read the book, so I’m familiar with it. I’d like to hear how you are modifying it. Maybe I might give it a try!
Love your podcast! Found you through Elizabeth Foss š
I just don’t do it religiously. I’ve done it once and lost 27 pounds in six weeks. I eventually gained it all back. I’m trying to do it “mostly” now. But if I want meat, I eat it. My goal is to use most of the ETL principles because I agree with them, but if I’m super strict I won’t find long term success because I know I don’t plan to eat like that for the rest of my life. However, I figure if I can follow those principles 80% of the time, I’ll be learning tools and boundaries that will continue for the rest of my life. I give myself a cheat meal or two a week. I may have an extra carb serving. ETL does have a modified diet in the book as well. This would be the goal but I allow myself a tad more freedom. The weight loss is slower but it is still coming off. If I see my weight loss come to a half, I know what to do… be more strict on the E2L.
I would luv to Instagram my food next week. I really need an accountability partner and I am trying to eat healthier. Luv ur blog and podcast. Great!!!
Instagram is coming! (Had to delay a bit but it’s coming soon!
My favorite way to get moving is to dance. I don’t have to go out to do it either. A friend got me started once with salsa. I had no idea how much fun dancing could be. It’s like swimming. It doesn’t feel like exercise at all. I so enjoy your blog Chrystal! You’ve also got me motivated to start running. It’s really actually a slow to moderate jog. I’ve been consistently walking/jogging in the mornings now for about a week or so. One day I missed and realized how much I enjoy it. Thanks so much for sharing your journey. It’s changing mine in so many good ways š
I can’t dance. Well… at least I can’t dance WELL. So I’m very intimadated. Maybe I just try it! I figure it I can learn to run, I can learn to swing my hips right!?!?!
I’m so thankful that you brought the IG #7daychallenge to fight the #fatdemon. I have had a lot of people to ask me about it and they will be doing the challenge this week. I will be taking again this week. I figure I’m gonna do the challenge one week at a time…but it actually will be one day at a time š Thank you for letting us share with you, and for sharing your struggles with weight to us too!
