Podcast: Play in new window
Why do some people struggle for a lifetime with losing and keeping weight off while others don’t seem to have a problem at all?
This is something I obviously have thoughts about because once again I talked longer than planned.
About 51:30 to be exact.
Before I launch into today’s show notes, I’d love to know your opinion.
Do you prefer a long format podcast (45-60 minutes) or short format (around 30 minutes)?
Be sure and leave your answer to that question in the comments, along with any other thoughts you have after listening to today’s podcast. I’ve got questions for you at the bottom of today’s notes if you want a starting point for what to talk about)
Well, I’m definitely in the camp of folks for whom arriving at and staying put at a healthy weight is a challenge. I’ve thought a time or two about the whole issue and have formed a few opinions and ideas about how thin people and “thick” people think differently.
I wish I could eat the greasiest, fattiest, calorie-pumped food and never gain weight but, it’s a google fact (as if that’s completely validating…) “You would have to walk for 6 hours straight to burn off a McDonald’s Big Mac combo meal.”
And we all know if I eat this combo meal, I will simply pass out on the couch… NOT walk 6 hours.
In today’s podcast we will explore why our thinking about food is important because the reality is that your “focus” on food will greatly impact how food affects your body and therefore your life.
In the area of your existence – including food and fitness – if you can change your thoughts, you can change your life.
Information does not equal adaptation. Want to change?
Put what you know into p-r-a-c-t-i-c-e. ~ @ChrystalHurst
I believe this with all of my heart.
And it is one of the most difficult things to do.
How many of us have gone on the proverbial “diet”, only to finish dieting, gain our weight back, plus a few extra pounds?
That’s because we never changed the way we thought about food in the first place.
It starts in your mind people!
This is not about fat or fluffy being better or worse than fit or thin. WHATEVER size you are, be the best you can be. However, long term, the big question is, how long will your body last given the way you are treating it?
I want you (and me) to treat your body as well as you can so that it will LAST YOU.
Nobody can do your life better than you can. But you have to healthy to do it.
You can change your life by changing your thoughts. ~ @ChrystalHurst
This is true for food too.
Listen in. Join me as I discuss this area of my life that is h-a-r-d. The #fatdemon is picking a fight with me ya’ll…
But I’m determined to fight back.

Hi Chrystal,
I like the song you chose for your Podcast; also you shared some powerful true healthy eating chronicles today! I’m very excited to know God cares about our bodies, because it is His dwelling place. The good eating tips you shared today, the Holy Spirit shared with me 3 months ago. I’m thinking why i eat. What is food for? Fuel. How much i eat, and what I’m eating. I’m thinking genetically, and also shapely. Lol. I have lost 34 pounds in 3 months by his grace! Everything you shared came from the heart of our heavenly Father. Oops! And i like the 80/20 rule!
Keep the Chrystal’s Chronicles Coming!
Love,
Joy
I love the song too!!! 🙂 Congrats on your weight loss!
Hi Chrystal, first I would definately prefer the short format.
What works best for me to lose weight is consistently exercising and eliminating or minimizing my salt and sugar intake. Usually things that trigger a dessert binge or consumption of too many calories is something emotional. If I feel blue about something I may have a really yummy slice of cake or other decadent dessert. I will say that I am stronger today in resisting the temptation to give in to emotional eating. I try to take everything a day at a time. So I will say to myself “today” i will eat well and walk more. I find that when I impose longer lengths of time to the exercise and right eating commitment, somewhere along the line I get bored with it. I have achieved losing as much as 35 pound over a period of time, not dieting, but just a consistent practice of some kind of exercise (Pilates or walking) and minimizing the calories.
Just a side note of encouragement to you. I don’t know how much you are struggling, I believe we all struggle with something. I encourage you to cheer yourself on everyday when you look in the mirror (it sounds corny, but it can’t hurt :). Sometimes I think we are way to hard on ourselves. Also although I enjoy really tasty well-made treats and good cookin, there is a reason beyond the taste why I may over indulge, and that is what I work on addressing.
Like the podcast. I must admit I enjoyed your videos you recorded early mornings (in your bathroom) for Kingdom Woman.
Keep doing what you do!
Blessings,
Sharon G.
You are so right about it being best to take it one day at a time. Yes. We all struggle with something… and yes… we should take the time to cheer ourselves on.
Thanks for your thoughts on video. Will keep that in mind 🙂
Shorter version for me! Great thanks!!!
Thanks for the feedback!
Chrystal your heart is precious and I love listening to you no matter what you’re talking about! If your talk is 30 min then I’m happy and if your talk is 60 min then I’m happy 🙂 the enemy would love for you to believe that you have to be a certain weight to be lovely. Ya know what? He’s a LIAR!!! Jesus and I both think that you are so beautiful.
Thanks for your encouragement Teri!
Today for the first time I’m able to listen to the podcast online on my blackberry phone, instead of going online on my laptop. This is such a blessing for me. Its winter, and our cold, raining weather has been messing with my exercise (morning walks) and meals. Long story short, just had a listen to the podcast now, the sun is out bright today (rain tomorrow) and I’m off to day my hour walk. Thank you for the encouragement and support as I fight this fat demon
Good for you for taking action! Hope you enjoyed your walk!
Hi Chrystal,
I am at a point where I do not know what to do. I have been on the medical weight loss for so long that it’s no longer effective. But the saddest part is I don’t know how to lose the weight without it. I hear what you’re saying and could probably write a book about it but I’m having so many problems with losing weight. I know what to eat and was doing a boot camp and now I have let myself go. In the past year I have gained over 30lbs. In 2010, I lost 70lbs due to the medical weight loss and now I have gain it all back, all except 20lbs. I am tired and I am a First Lady, minister and praise and worship leader who sings alot but do not have the energy to do either. What advice can you give me so I can be an example to the women at my church because it is an epidemic!!!
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and feelings. A few questions for you? What season of life you are in? Sometimes there are “woman seasons” that make losing weight more difficult. Also, I have heard of many people who take extreme measures to lose weight then that weight loss doesn’t end up being a long-term success. Fast weight gain or weight loss can lead to an impaired metabolism and or stressed adrenal glands – both which can lead to difficulty losing weight. Have you ever tried losing weight by focusing on changing food choices? It’s much slower than medical weight loss but it can last a lot longer. I would say two things: Focus on making lifestyle changes that you can use for the rest of your life verses fixes that work fast but are not sustainable. Also, its okay seek help. I hear you saying you do not know what to do. Have you tried Weight Watchers? Have you ever counted calories to make sure that you are aware when you are eating too many calories or the wrong kind of calories? MyFitnessPal is free and online and has lots of very helpful information. You can also try the Fitbit. I wear mine all the time and am WAY more conscious of how much I’m moving everyday. I have friends also have Fitbits and we hold each other accountable. Keep in mind I’m not a medical professional and you should always talk to your doctor about options for losing weight. Sometimes people really do need a doctor’s help to lose weight even while eating real food because there are other medical challenges that are preventing them from losing weight effectively. Sorry you are having to battle through this… but you can experience victory. It may not be easy but it is definitely possible and within your reach.
Hi Chrystal, I don’t have a preference for the length of the recordings. I think that you will best serve us by recording exactly what God has for you to record. Really, I love listening to you and your honesty and transparency will never get old to me; it’s so refreshing and very much needed. You also have a beautiful voice. I wouldn’t like them too short (just because I look forward to your wisdom), but again, we’re all better served if you’re led by our Father. I haven’t even listened to this latest podcast yet, but wanted to respond to your request right away. I will listen shortly.
Thank you for everything.
Long or short it does not matter. It’s uplifting and truthful so I can complete my tasks while listening
Hi Chrystal,
I just discovered your Blog and Podcast last week. A friend sent me an email from your site and it was on” Why God Makes Me Do The Hard Stuff.” I loved it so, I subscribed to receive your blog and pod casts.Thank you so very much for sharing. I just love your family. I’ve listen to your Dad for years and used a couple of Priscilla’s bible studies in my small group and I just recently purchased Anthony’s new Album. I really like your Blog and you can talk as long as you like. 🙂 I listen at my desk while working. It is a blessing and it helps the day go by smoother. Thank you again!
Until next time,
Patricia
Chrystal… girl! You have been all up and down my alley lately! I am ready for a real change. My significant weight gain has come ever since I married my husband (October 2013). People keep calling it “love weight”, but I am trying my hardest to come against it – especially since he hasn’t gained a pound!!! *insert angry face*
I am fighting the fat demon myself, and hoping he will flee, but every time I pass a McDonalds I just get the urge. I am determined to lose 30 pounds by August ( which will bring me back down to 150) and I will be happy. Do you know of any weight-loss plans that tell you exactly what to eat day in and day out? That’s what I need and some real accountability. Maybe we can start a group?
Thanks so much!!
P.S I like the longer podcasts. If I need to pause and I come I will do just that.
Prefer the short format (15-30 minutes)…Thanks for sharing your heart and wisdom. I was encouraged as you reiterated a lot of info I have learned in my endeavors and pursuit towards a better version of me. I am believing God to live a loooooonnnng LIFE HEALTHY…so I do my part by eating healthy and exercising daily…I CHOOSE NOT to DIET but to make CHOICES that help me in my LIFE GOAL.
Thanks for the feedback!
Wow! Thank you, again. I’m encouraged; I choose to get back up again. I, too, want to be the best me I am meant to be; however, I (my flesh) don’t want to suffer and I know I must inure hardship (discipline, moderation, contentment) to be transformed, physically, mentally, and spiritually. I choose to get back up after failing more times than I could ever count.
Hi Chrystal,
I just listened to your podcast. It does not matter long or short–either way is fine. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to you speak your heart and your encouraging words. Thank you for your transparency and openness in sharing with us. I can’t wait to hear more of your podcast. You are truly and inspiration!
