There are so many things that we deal with in everyday life that have no significance whatsoever for eternity, but they take up brain space, none-the-less.
They are the object of our time, attention, or finances.
So while my husband is focusing in on the real NCAA March Madness, I will sit next to him on the couch and delve into my own areas of personal and very real madness.
So I’ve decided to take a leap, a full-court leap, and aim straight-away for the goal and object of things women think about – but may not actually talk about.
And I hope I nail them. Straight on.
I’m aiming for a slam dunk.
While the topics may seem a bit random, the goal is to talk about stuff that we don’t always make the center of discussion. I want to clearly talk about the “goal” – the random objects of our attention.
And trust me. My brain operates at 85 miles an hour about random things on a regular basis – much to my husband’s chagrin. So as I give my brain the freedom to spin out and my mouth the opportunity to open up. I hope you open up too!
I look forward to knowing that I’m not the only one who thinks about these things. Be sure and leave me comments!
If you subscribe to the blog and will automatically receive my commentary in your email box – I apologize in advance for the madness.
So let’s talk about women and hair – and not the hair on our heads.
This morning, I posted this picture on Instagram as I went out for my morning run. I couldn’t help but notice that there is a dark shadow above my top lip.
First of all – is it “mustache” or “moustache”. I had no idea so I had to look it up.
According to the Grammartist: Mustache is the U.S. spelling of the word referring to hair on the upper lip. Moustache is the preferred spelling in all the main varieties of English from outside the U.S.
So now… you officially know how to spell the word.
Either way… I have one – a mousy mustache.
And I think with time and age it’s getting darker.
I have been in denial for some time.
Shared this on my facebook page a few weeks ago:
Daughter #1 took the boys to Chick Fil A so I could have a moment of quiet. She just called to tell me about a conversation she thought I might want to be aware of.
Background: This morning I showed the boys a Christmas picture of a family whose son has entered his teenage years and now has the beginnings of a mustache. They were in shock…
Son #1: I can’t believe that some of my friends have mustaches.
Sister: Well you know… when boys get older, they start to grow mustaches…
(Long Pause)
Son #2: And some girls do too.
Sister: What girls do you know that have a mustache?
(not so long pause)
Sons #1 & #2 in unison: Mommy
So yea… I’ve been in denial.
Partly because I’m afraid.
I mean… what happens if I remove it and it grows back thicker or darker?
I also convinced myself that others don’t see it. But my kids have let me know that’s absolutely not true.
Lastly, I’m completely ignorant of the best way to go about getting rid of it.
The options are endless! Apparently I could wax, shave, or thread it. And all of them are not painless endeavors.
So I’m going to investigate. I’ll share my findings.
And then I’ll let you know if I’m actually going to do anything about it.
In the meantime, I’m glad to know that I’m not the only person dealing with the issue of unsightly hair in visible places.
I was so glad to find this video. It’s H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S!
Do yourself a favor and watch it!

Your not alone………video was funny
LOL!!! This is hilarious! I noticed one lone chin hair in my mid-twenties and now I find myself checking daily for a small family of wiskers 😛 I have to agree with the ladies in the video. “find a solution”! I have given hugs to sisters whose chin almost cut me….too much.
You are absolutely not alone Chrystal. Little surprises as the years go fleeting by. Keep smiling 🙂
Whoa Chrystal thanks for sharing. I feel embarrassed and ashamed about my facial hair. I avoid coming into close contact to people so they can’t see it. I pluck with tweezers and use facial hair removal. It does not last long or barely removes hair. I heard people say laser hair removal is good but expensive. I tried researching why women get facial hair. I’ve heard people say hormones. It hard for me to ask women about. Thanks for opening up about it. God bless.
I could not pull up video.
Let me check. I can see it on my computer but not on my phone. How are you viewing the blog?
In my phone.
Yup! I can’t see it on my phone either. Not sure about why? I’ll continue to check into it. In the meantime, when you get to a computer, watch it! It’s hilarious 🙂
Too funny!!!!! I have at least 3 or 4 hairs that would lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvve to form a beard but while I am yet able I will be plucking them(when) I remember!!!!!! Awesome post lady!!!
No, you are not alone. I have one too. I’ve had it all my life. Some days it’s faint other days it noticeable. I choose to do nothing about it. It doesn’t phase me and most of the time I forget it’s there unless one of my kids or nephews chooses to point it out. Then I look at it, shrug my shoulders and keep right on going. No harm done.
Oh and for the hairs on my neck or chin I just pluck and go. I can always tell when my cycle is about to start because they start growing profusely.
That friend is HILARIOUS!
This is so true! The video was funny! I heard a speaker one time who said she had three sons and before they could ask a girl to marry them, the girls had to agree they would pluck her chin hairs when she got old! I, too, have one on my chin that I look for every day, but somehow can never see it until it is at least 2 inches long! Yikes!!
I’ve been plucking and waxing for years, it’s just part of my routine! I’ve also tried electrolysis.
The video is too funny. Do I need to admit that I pluck my chin ha ha Women and hair. love it!
Ok, here go my mustache confessions..
When I was in high school this guy I was dating told me repeatedly that I had a mustache and denied it. I figured the hair on my face showed up more because I was “lighter”. Then I went to college and my friend made fun of me because I had “T-boz” (from TLC) sideburns..I though I was being fashionable. AND then I found hair on my chin!!! I said “Oh no” and shaved it to later find out that was a mistake. So for the last 15 years or so, broke college student or not, I have regularly had my eyebrows, lip, chin and side of my face either waxed or threaded on a very regular basis. It is just a part of what I HAVE to do. So a few months ago, a friend convinced me that I could save money by doing my own waxing at home. I went to Sally’s and got the recommended supplies. The waxing was ok, but I never did as well as the professionals removing the hair. So I thought maybe the wax wasn’t hot enough, I ignored the instructions and got the wax really hot (so hot the container melted had a hole in it) so I let it cool a little bit and applied it to my face. Well, it didn’t hardly remove any hair, so I said use the Nair (although later I read you are not suppose to apply Nair to freshly treated/waxed skin). As I was removing the Nair, I was also removing my SKIN!!!! Yes, I said my skin, I had a chemical burn on my chin 🙁 My skin finally returned to its natural color after months. So needless to say, I leave it to the professionals now. I alternate between waxing and threading. Yes it hurts, but to me it is worth it.
OMGdness. That’s all I can say. Read your comment with my mouth open the whole time in disbelief. See… THAT is why I’ve just worn my mustache proudly. Trying to get it off is TOO MUCH DRAMA! LOL! Seriously girl… you made my whole day! LOL!
I’ve been hairy all my life and it seems to have gotten worse with age. I’ve tried various methods of facial hair removal, but what I found that works best for my lip, chin, side burns (whole face) is sugar wax. The hair grows back lighter and thinner over time. It is painful. However, it’s part of my monthly maintenance and budget. I know it makes a difference because my 7 year old will tell me when it needs to be done. Lol!!!
Won’t those babies tell us the truth!
OMG!!! Chrystal, this is an awesome discussion and the video is spot on!! As I child I would be responsible for plucking the hairs from my grandmother’s chin all the while I would be praying that I never would have to do it to myself but low and behold, that mess is hereditary!!! I have been plucking chin hairs since my late teens and carry tweezers with me everywhere I go.
Don’t bother with laser treatments. They didn’t work for me. I spend the first five minutes of my makeup regimen every day searching for and attacking unsightly chin and lip hairs. I use one of those “mini-shavers” for my upper lip. But tweezers are the only thing that will work for chin hairs. My great-grandmother looked like a Billy goat, and I swore I’d never let myself get that way. In fact, I’ve made my step-daughter (I have no daughters) swear that if I’m ever in the hospital and can’t do it myself, she’ll come and shave me. Now that I’m in my 60s the chin hairs are becoming white, and those suckers are STIFF! I always feel like I’ve accomplished something when I yank them out!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Finally another woman is able to admit this on a huge platform…Thank you! I have always been a “hairy girl” and it continues to get worse the older I get. Nothing works well for me. Has anyone tried laser hair removal on their chin? So glad you opened this topic up!
I have chinny hairs too lol. Call me crazy but I have learned to carry tweezers in my purse, car and at home. So where ever I am (at work, home, on a break etc) I can take a few minutes to tweeze my chin and my eyebrows if necessary. They are annoying, because if I tweeze today within a few days, they are back! I have never tried laser treatment but I have considered it. I used to use over the counter hair creams to remove it, but I stopped. Great post!
Oh my goodness -my husband calls itt spaghetti brain! So much stuff taking up space in my brain !!
And the hair….I have thyroid disease and the “extra” hair is part of it. I hadn’t felt good hoe awhile but had put off going to doctor-only went when hair got out of control …oh vanity!!
OMG!!! Yes this was H I L A R I O U S!!!! Thank you Crystal for sharing. Please find a solution for this “hair” issue. I needed a good laugh today! One thing in favor for me, my hairs are white, but they so shine. I have used hair removal creams, but they burn my face. I also have shaved, with and with out shave cream. The last time I shaved I used a moisturizer instead of shave cream. Not bad, I didn’t feel like I was doing a “man thing” so much!!!!!!
Oh, man! Now we’re talking! Laser hair removal going down RIGHT NOW! And I’m dying that I can’t tweeze while doing laser hair treatments (you have to shave). It is worth the upkeep bc it feels so great to have it gone! I freak out just a little at the idea of it being there at all…like I keep tweezers and an eyebrow grooming tool in my purse, just in case of a facial hair emergency.
This made me laugh soooooooooooooo hard after such a hard weekend! I have chin hairs. They started off as one hair on the left side. I shaved it with a razor….BIG MISTAKE!!!! now I have a lot, and hair growing on the right side as well. I pluck, but they grow back. Someone recommended threading. I do that now, but I feel like it’s a waste of money because I still have to use the tweezers. The tweezers work best, but they have left these unsightly dark spots on my chin which in my opinion clearly lets everyone know I have chin hairs. I keep tweezers in my purse too! I find you can really see ALL them in the mirror on the visor in your car/truck. When the kids get out, I do a face check and commence to plucking!
Sheez! so funny! In high school a friend of mine told me that I could shave it (mustache) and it would be okay it would not grow back dark well it has been years since that day and I am still shaving and plucking!!!!!! What about nose hairs? How does it know when to grow long and past the edge of your nostril? Am I vain or what?
Hi Chrystal! Shout-out from NC! My mustache and I are smiling while I’m typing this—and loving the video too! This year I’ve skimmed your blog a few times, checked out your Kingdom Woman snippets on youtube, and my Kingdom Woman book just arrived today. But above all else, The Mustache Chronicles have officially catupulted you to first place on my 2014 list of women to follow as they follow Christ. ‘Cuz if you will tell the truth about your facial hair, you will tell the truth about everything! See you soon for more March Madness!
Wow, I am not alone! I have been obsessing over this for a few months. My husband keeps telling me that it is just peach fuzz and he is begging me not to bother with it. My daughter says it is because of my light skin and I will tan a bit when the season changes. Me on the other hand, I am seeing a very potential mustache that seems to darken everytime I look in the mirror! I don’t know what I am going to do. For now, I have to stay away from the mirror.
