Kingdom Woman Journals
A Few Thoughts on Chapters 9 thru 12!
~ Today’s “R&R” ~
Reflection Assignment
Every week you will have an opportunity to reflect on the previous week’s reading.
Don’t feel pressure to answer all of the questions.
- Fun question – If a movie was being made of your life and you could choose the actor/actress to play you, who would you choose and why?
- Part III of Kingdom Woman talks about the importance of a woman’s personal, family, church, and community life. However, as I discuss in today’s video, the only way for us to know how God wants us to order and prioritize our lives is to ASK HIM!!! He will be faithful to give us the direction for what we do and how much time and effort we allot to the different areas of our lives. So be honest. Based on how you CURRENTLY live your life, where are your priorities ~ marriage, kids, work, church, community, money, time with God, etc? (You can base your answers on a variety of factors: time spent, the order in which you do things, or the discipline with which you address the various areas of your life. We can’t necessarily spent 8 hours in Bible study just because we spend that amount of time at work but a person disciplined to daily study could still say that their time with God was their priority!)
- In Chapter 9, we discuss marriage and singlehood. If you are single and desiring of marriage, what are the top five qualities of the man you would like to marry? I’m sure that most of us would say that we wold want to marry a man who loves God and who is a Kingdom Man so choose five OTHER qualities. If you haven’t made a list, you should! It might help you recognize him when God brings him your way!
- If you are married, what is your single most difficult ongoing area of challenge?
- Whether you are single or married, you can choose to have JOY. Chapter 9 discusses our ability to choose an outlook of hope based on the fact that God is for us even in the midst of difficult circumstances. What does choosing joy look like for you?
- Chapters 10 discusses the importance of roles vs. equality and the principle of submission. Do you cringe when you here the “S” word? Why? Why not?
- Chapter 11 discusses the importance of the woman and her role with her church. Mentoring in the spirit of Titus 2 is a big part of how we can grow and women in our various seasons. Do you need mentoring? What area do you need it in most (marriage, parenting, spiritual growth)? What about you mentoring someone else? What area(s) of life could you teach someone else about (cooking, excellence on the job, self-care, fashion? Mentors don’t have to be perfect. They just have to be willing to share what they’ve learned.
- Chapter 12 discusses the Kingdom Woman and her community. Many times, Christians can bunker down and do church so well that we don’t allow ourselves to be a light for Christ outside of the sanctuary! How are you being a light for Christ in your community?
- Feel free to comment on the video devotional regarding anything that resonated with you.

#4 I’m married and our biggest area of concern is communication. There is none, we aren’t mad at each other it’s just that I can talk but my husband never responds, even when it’s very important things
#6. No the S word does not scare me. I would LOVE for my husband to be the leader of our home especially spiritually, but in all ways, he’s just not interested
Hi Peggy, I understand what you are trying to say on #6. I went to through the same experience with my ex-husband. It is hard when we want to do what is right with God, but they are not in the same tune as we are.
Hang in there, don’t loose hope!
God Bless!!
#4 Been there… have the T-shirt. Stay encouraged. Many women have been in the same pair of shoes and their children, friends, and family are blessed their the woman’s character despite what her man may or may not have been. It’s still possible for you to do your thing well. (Pay special attention to the story of Deborah in this week’s R&R.)
Towanda, Windsor Mill, Md, Pineapple Upside Down Cake (get thee behind me #fatdemon!), Answer #1 – Kerry Washington! Love her! My admiration for her work has certainly intensified as a result of her latest role as Olivia Pope but what I love about what she brings to her work is passion. That totally describes me. She’s “goes hard in the paint” and is not one afraid to back down and who gets stuff done. She has maintained integrity on and off the screen (you don’t hear about her in the tabloids), she puts her family first and knows how to keep her business private (who knew she was even dating anyone only for us to later find out that she had gotten married). I would want her to totally portray me. Answer #2 – GOD, Family, Church, Community – in that order, at least each day I make an attempt to. I find that in theory spending time with GOD is my #1 priority and I try my best to make time. However, life gets in the way and then GOD’s grace kicks in because if I’m not able to dedicate the time I’d like, I find myself constantly talking to GOD throughout the day. GOD and my family are non-negotiable for me. Absolutely no one and nothing come before them. I hold several leadership positions in my local assembly but make it very clear that my first priority is to the ministry to my GOD and family. Church work can wait. Answer #4 – effective communication. My hubby and I communicate, I just desire it to be more effective. Answer #5 – choosing joy for me is simply being able to stop to enjoy all that I have. It brings me joy to enjoy the little things (time at the playground with my 3yo, impromptu movie nights with my boo thang {my husband yall!} or simply enjoying those moments I have no commitments. Answer #6 – I did before I got married because I didn’t understand and now I have no problem with submitting to my husband. I understand submitting to mean deferring to him when it comes to making decisions that are in the best interest of our family and trusting the GOD in him to lead us in the right direction. Submission is not a dirty word at all. Answer#7 – I need mentoring in my desire to grow more spiritually. That’s high on my prayer list – that I would have someone to whom I can be accountable. I currently serve as a mentor to a 16yr old young lady at our church who actually sought me out because she said she’s learned a lot from me and feels there’s more for her to learn. I was humbled. Answer #12- Being a light in my community is something I’m still working on. I am not as community involved as I’d like to be. Answer #9 – what most resonated with me from the video was that whole thing about how we can go further if we focus what we put on the inside vs staying super busy on the outside. YES! I totally get that on many levels and am working on first making sure I do my due diligence in depositing more of GOD in me vs feeling like being super busy in “church work” is the answer. NO. Wrong answer. I don’t want to be busy doing “church work”. I want to be busy doing the work of the church as Jesus did and I’ll know how to do that when I spend time with Him and allow Him to deposit into me (whew, I just blessed myself).
Love how you are fully engaged and attentive in your journey. Loved reading your response! Thanks for sharing. How’d the getting up at 6am?
So yeah, umm. about that 6am thing.. well, see, it’s not going so well but i’m determined to get better. I find that our to be extremely difficult (I know there are some up at 4am and I’m struggling at 6…) working on discipling myself.
Keep striving 🙂
Katheryne, Hatfield, PA, lemon cookies
5. Choosing joy for me is taking breaks to do things that make me laugh or smile.
6. I like the word submission because I grew up watching my mother submit to my father in everything. It is beautiful.
8. I’m seeking the Lord’s heart right now for how He wants me to be a light for Christ in my community.
9. The video made me smile because I learned something new about Jesus.
Hi Katheryne, good to see you!
Hi Mercedes 🙂
#5. Yes, #6 That’s great that you have a great picture of how beautiful submission can be. #8 He WILL tell you 🙂
🙂 🙂
Mercedes, Hialeah, FL. Favorite dessert: Home made Apple Pie a la Mode!
1. If I was going to have a movie made about my life, I think that the best person to play my part it would have to be Dame Margaret Natalie “Maggie” Smith. I find that the two of us are very similar personality wise. She can be very funny and other times she can be so serious she will make you cry, strong, that it feels that she can take on the world. I love her character in Downton Abbey.
2. Priorities: God, Family, Church, Community
3. Single/Divorced- at this time in my life I am really not looking for a relationship at all. Of course it is God’s decision at the end of the day, if He wants to, He will send someone and if He does, He will make sure he has all the right qualities!
4. Not Married.
5. I can experience real joy in many things around me, and knowing God I know that I can experience it regardless of my circumstances.
6. I find it hard because how can I submit to someone that does not submit to God? When I was married I tried to do just that, but my husband was never a true man of God. He would say that he was but his actions said something else. At the end he left my daughter and me after 13 years of marriage and never even had a relationship with my daughter. So, that is why I couldn’t submit!
7. I feel I need mentoring in my spiritual life. I also feel I can mentor others like: Cooking-I love to cook (have a culinary degree). I am always helping our those that are wanting to do a certain dish. I can help those that want to have Excellence at their jobs – I believe that your job is another ministry, how can you tell others that you are a Christian and yet you get to work late everyday, not do your job, not take pride in what you do. I have also helped many women that have come to me asking how they can look better about themselves.
8. At the moment I am in search of a community program where I can be useful. In the part I volunteered at a local Woman’s Pregnancy Center helping single moms.
9. Loved what you said about the donut shop next to the gym, I was laughing the whole time. It reminded me when I was going to Weight Watchers that there was a Pizza Hut on one side of it and a Colombian restaurant of the other side that made all these empanadas and roasted meats that smelled so good, it would drive me crazy! I feel your pain Chrystal!
You have a culinary degree Mercedes! That is so cool!! Do you use saffron in your cooking? I’ve never used it and had a dish with it once that was really good. It was a rice dish. I’m curious to know how else it can be used, for instance with vegetables or in soups/stews. (How exciting that you have a degree in cooking. Wow 🙂 )
Hi Katheryne, I love to cook and I love to share food and recipe ideas. Something I love to do is take regular recipes and make them healthier, without loosing the flavor! So I am always experimenting.
In reference to your question about Saffron, yes I do use it. I am of Spanish/Moroccan descent, born in Cuba so we do use it in many dishes. The famous Paella, for example, takes saffron and it is used in Indian, Mexican, Thai, and even French cuisine. One thing to keep in mind, is that it is expensive to buy good Saffron and you must use it conservatively, as it has a poignant taste. Depending on what you are making (stews, soups, chicken, seafood and fish, to name a few) you can use from a pinch to 1 or half a teaspoon, but no more than that. There are many different recipes you can find online on different sites. If you go to allrecipes.com and enter Saffron on the search you will find many different ones, including some desserts.
Let me know how it goes and Bon Appetit!!
Thanks so much Mercedes!!! I found a recipe I could cook. It’s a Tunisian Lamb dish…wowww! It looks amazing. I may have to forego the traditional turkey this year – hehehe. God bless you & yours (smiles). Have a great day Mercedes.
You are very welcome! Let me know how it turns out. I can talk about cooking and recipes all day!!
ha, ha!!
God Bless!
If this page is still up then, I will let you know! So glad we’ve “met”…
Culinary degree! Wow! Love what you said about your job being your ministry… so true! And keep praying for me! At any moment the #fatdemon might catch me off guard!
Hi Chrystal, I hear you about the Fat Demon, it is hard for me too. I enjoy cooking and eating very much…I do, I must admit!! and yes, I am already praying for you and all the other girls.
Have a blessed day!
Jeralyn, Sterling, CO, fave dessert is angel food cake
#1 Mariska Hargitay…I admire her strength and confidence on and off the screen.
#2 1-time with God
2-exercise
3 -business
#4 communication
#5 keeping my focus on my life and my faith…what God has called me to do
#6 yes…I’ve been passive when I should have been assertive
#7 I am praying for a friend to share my spiritual journey with. I grew up with an alcoholic father. I have much to share about the dysfunction of addictions.
#8 work has always put me in the midst of my community. Going for coffee, errands, athletic events. There are peple everywhere who may need just a smile.
#7 So awesome that you are willing to share! Many people are too embarrassed to let their difficulties bless someone else.
Tasha, Dallas, TX. Favorite Dessert: Anything WITHOUT chocolate or coconut. Sad I know…maybe that’s why I can’t lose these last 40lbs!!!
6. I didn’t use to cringe at that word. I was happy and willing to do so. However, since we’ve been separated for so long and I’ve had to become mom, dad, breadwinner, everything…I find it hard to even think about submission again. Not even sure how to do that anymore. I would love to be able to have that aspect of my life back. It was beautiful to submit and I totally enjoyed it. We didn’t start out that way, but by the time he left, things had begun to evolve into this amazing and beautiful thing.
7. I would love to have a mentor in spiritual growth. I have friends that are believers, but to just have that older woman in my life that could and would just take the time out to allow me to glean from her. I sit in church and look at the Evans’ and I think WOW what a blessing that must be to have mom, grandmother, sister, etc in the faith and have those people to glean from. Seriously I have thought to just be able to sit at their table and glean the crumbs that they leave behind……AMAZING! I can dream……;-)
I mentor a few young ladies I’ve come into contact with on how to meal plan, with the menus and grocery shopping and so forth.
Girl, if I could live without chocolate, I’d have lost my 40 lbs a long time ago! So great that you are mentoring others!
1. Lea Salonga! She can sing and act and we are from the same country! She’s been my favorite actor/singer since I was a teen.
3. I’ve never written a list, so this is good for me to do…
* Enjoy good music and can be a good conversation about it
* Laid back (but not too laid back! lol)
* Can make me laugh 🙂
* Job stability
* servant leader
6. Don’t cringe. Relieved that I can submit to someone I can trust and that he has a good relationship with the LORD that I can submit (of course, he still needs to come into my life first!).
9. I love that your videos are filmed – not in a fancy TV studio – but in your bathroom and the van… and that you get interrupted in the midst of filming. I feel like I’m watching a friend go about her daily life. Thanks for being so honest and real!
Glad you like the videos. I was thinking this morning… I really should be more professional about this whole video business! LOL! Thanks for the encouragement!
Oops! Forgot to include my info:
Nightingale, Miami, FL, Favorite Dessert: Carrot Cake
#2 Hi everyone! At this point in my life my top priorities are continuing to build a relationship with Christ and my Hubby. And getting out of debt and building a good financial foundation.
#4 I am a newly wed and my one year anniversary is Sunday, yay! But I learned my area of challenge in my marriage is patience. I have to be patient with my husband leaving things on the counter, not always being able to things when I may want them to be done. Marriage is all about patience and I’m making progress!
#5 Choosing joy is making a decision to have a positive attitude no matter what the situation may look like. Every morning when I wake up I make a decision to be friendly and pleasant no matter how I may feel at the time. Some days are easier that others, lol.
Congrats on your upcoming one year!
Michelle, DFW, sorry, I have 2 favorite desserts… peach cobbler/ apple crisp.
#2. My current priorities are Time with God, my marriage, my children, my church & then my community.
#8. I try to show/share Jesus love to everyone I meet. I am currently working on ways to contribute to my community but have yet to act on them. TOO many ideas & only 1 person. One things needs to happen for sure… I need to ACT. I won’t have it all figured out…ever. So, I should stop trying to figure it all out before I actually volunteer, help, commit, etc.
Aren’t peach cobbler and apple crisp basically the same thing? fruit and sugary bread! LOL! Both delicious! And you and I both are on the “ACT” train. I will plan all day and then nothing will happen because I won’t DO IT!
*thing
Courtney, Grapevine, TX, pineapple carrot cake cupcakes!
1. Even though I don’t look like her, I would lovvvvvve for Angela Bassett to play me. She’s the epitome of class and strength! She’s beautiful and just so talented!
2. Time with God, marriage, church, work, and money.
4. Two becoming one! I sometimes think of things as mine and his.
5. Joy for me is knowing there’s something good in each day! God gave me another day to praise Him and another day to receive His love and grace.
6. The “S” word makes me cringe! It just sounds so harsh and… Well.. Submissive! LOL!
I was caught thinking in terms of “mine and his” today! #convicted!
Becca, TN, Tiramisu.
1.Can I bring back Audrey Hepburn? If not, I guess I’d go with Catherine Zeta Jones, because, well, Zorro. (If we’re going off of sheer looks, I’ve had a few people tell me that I resemble Natalie Portman.)
4.My hubs is a selfless giver, which is wonderful! But sometimes he lumps us (the kids & I) into “himself” and unintentionally gives of us by default of giving of himself without consideration of how it might effect all of us. Thankfully it has improved immensely over the years. The challenge on my end with it isn’t the aspect of being in ministry or having to “share” him so much as it is that I get offended that the kids and I (seemingly) weren’t a priority. Sometimes, in a particular moment, there is truth to it that needs to be addressed. But often, it’s not really true. I just let my feelings get the best of me.
5. I think that joy is closely related to hope. Even if a situation is bleak, through that overflow of the Holy Spirit’s peace I am reminded of my great hope in Him. And that breeds joy unexplainable. I can have joy without the happy. But if I take hope away, joy doesn’t exist.
6. When it comes to the marriage realtionship, not at all.My husband has done a stellar job of being a godly leader, so I have no reason to cringe. However when it comes to submitting directly to God in a matter that I feel like he needs help “fixing”… well that’s a different story 😉
8. I volunteer regularly at my daughter’s school. Just giving time speaks volumes to teachers and students. From another perspective, choosing for my child to attend public school (at least at this time) is part of our light. I have been told countless times by various teachers and administrators that my 7yo is a “light”, a “little missionary”, that she “brings sunshine with her wherever she goes”… that it is both encouraging and humbling. Only Jesus.
Shellye, Dallas, Tx, BANANA CHEESECAKE!!! 🙂
Thank you for both videos. I love the funnel analogy. I love how everyday things can be used to illustrate how we should live our lives.
#2 I really believe I’m getting to the place where I can consider myself living in a funnel – correctly. When I got married, I took a sabbatical from ministry life so I could focus on my new ‘position’. My life’s not perfect but I’ve come a long way. So now I can slowly re-enter ministry, renewed and refreshed and closer to The Lord than I ever was before. I feel ready to accept whatever God places before me without fear because if He’s opening the doors, He believes I can handle it all to His glory. My priority is to stay very close to Him so I can hear Him clearly so I can walk in my purpose.
#4 Maintaining balance between my roles as wife, mom, and womanpreneur is my ongoing area of challenge but it’s getting better!
#6 I’ve learned not to be afraid or cringe when I hear the “S” word? I trust the Jesus in my husband and when he’s not Kingdom Man-ish, I trust God has me covered.
#7 My heart has always been tender towards teen and single moms. I can now add moms in blended families because I’ve been a bonus mom for nearly 5 years plus my bio kids also have a bonus mom for over 15 years so I’ve learned how to work in both capacities. I’m always open to wherever The Lord directs me.
#8. I use social media and my businesses to share my faith with my sphere of influence and my husband has agreed to open our home to couples bible study during our 6/week Destiny series at our church. I’m very excited about that!!
Banana cheesecake!? Yummmm! May need to share that recipe. What type of business do you do!? I think there is a need for blended family ministry!!!!
Hi Stephanie! Yes, it’s actually banana surprise cheesecake. I’m gonna put the recipe on my blog for the blog hop this week. It’s a holiday favorite in our home. My husband and I have a graphic design and marketing firm. And yes, I think a blended family ministry would be ideal. Most of the information I found to help me were from people in other parts of the world, like New Zealand. I think what blessed and helps me us the fact that I was a bio mom dealing with my kid’s stepmom before I became one myself so I’ve seen it from both sides. I have to say I had to go back and apologize to my kid’s stepmom once I became one. It’s a tough position to be in. In our case, the kids are great. It’s the adults that had issues! Lol
Stephanie, Mt Pleasant TX, warm peach cobbler with homeade vanilla icecream… #1)Reese Witherspoon – She can be dingy, smart and country. LoL #2 – marriage kids (family) church time with God then work – in that order.. Marriage and kids are on same… #3 affectionate- has goals, manage money well, likes to travel loves kids — this was the check off list criteria I made right before I let my husband.. And this is what I went by when me husband and I started dating.. And as I checked off each thing I knew God created him for me #4) accepting positive critizm or as I called it critiquing my methods #5)joy is choosing to accept things “as is” and being at peace with the before during & after #6) seeing as how my husband is under Gods authority I do not mind being submissive… Sometimes I have to pull my own arm but at the end of the day as long as we are under Gods provision and will for our lives I’m completely fine with it. #7)I am currently needing to be mentored in parenting.. This learn as you go stuff is tough — and of course leadership — and I feel as though I can mentor by reaching out to young teens to choose abstinence.
I do know however time with God and closeness to Him will allow me to be better in every area of my time. As far as my #2 answer goes… I am working on it. I keep my focus on God and my family while I work… I just don’t devote quiet time with God as often as I should.
Wendy Garner, Dallas, TX, pumpkin pie.
1) This should be answered in one sentence but why make it that easy? I don’t know. I don’t watch TV and movies are limited. I don’t keep up with stars. As I was thinking about it I would want to give it to someone that had the same values as I do. I would want it to be a chance for someone that thought they would never get a chance.
2) I find this question funny because my life use to be very orderly from the time I woke up until the time I went to bed. I would wake up spend time with God, kids, and then me. While I still wake up and spend time with God the other half is changing. I went to a summit and one thing that was said that really spoke to me was if you are single and want to be married than you need to put your future husband before your kids. Don’t be single and the kids come before you future husband. As I reflected on that in my life I realized that is a big conflict I have right now. I am trying to take how it used to be instead of allowing God to change me to what it is going to be. Considering the circumstance I am not really sure how to find that balance. I just pray some days are good and some days are a hot mess. I will say this while I might not see the change in an orderly manner right now; I am seeing a change in myself.
3) I would want my future husband to be a solider.
a. Protector-take up for me, shield me from others, have my best interest at heart, jealous
b. Stand up to me-so many men today don’t stand up to women. I want a man to put me in my place.
c. Provider- Yea financial provider is nice but a provider of spiritual needs.
d. Love me like Christ loves the church.
e. Unselfish
Romonda, Lr, AR, purple-typing everything over-hit the backspace and lost everything 🙁
1. Angela Bassett-plays excellent strong roles. Could play the overcomer, which I am, perfectly.
2. CURRENTLY God is my priority, and this is new for me and I love it!! Ive always said it but wasnt really doing it! I recently united with a bible church, not even a year ago, and my faith is increasing more and more everyday. I spend more time praying, reading , and listening. I also spend some time DAILY doing something for my recovery. Now this is something that I’ve done for the last 14yrs, but God just revealed to me that it was MY ministry! Talk about a spiritual awakening?!?! God is just awesome. I have recently started a new meeting at my church.
3. I am single and this is a hard question…
1. sense of humor
2. likes to travel, experience new things
3. handsome(kinda vain huh?)
4. honest, faithful
5. great lover(yes, it matters to me)..pray for me. lol
5. Choosing joy means smiling in the midst of trials. It means suiting up and showing up no matter what!!! It means encourage someone else when Im going through.
6. Yes I cringe when I hear the word SUBMISSIVE…I feel like I have to do everything my husband tells me to do!! And I have always said thats not gonna happen….I know better now, but I still cringe, because Im so used to being in charge.
7. I need mentoring in spiritual growth, and God has placed the right people in my life at the right time!! Im so honored that He loves me enough to do so. I mentor people in the program of recovery, teach them how to handle life on life terms without drugs and alcohol…and yes the answer is still God 🙂
#5 yes! It matters! Anything that you have to do on a regular basis should at least be enjoyable I think!!! LOL!!!
Raquel, Irving, TX Tiramisu
1. America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), she is adorable and could totally pull me off!
2. The order really varies by day but most days I start with my husband, because if I start my day helping him get off to a good start, prepare his breakfast, pack his lunch and if I’m keeping the car that day I drop him off at work, I’m also serving God. Once I get him off to work I am able to go for a walk and praise and talk to God, come home and spend time in His word. Then I take care of the house, walk to school to pick up my niece. Right now work comes last because I have significantly cut back on my work load once God showed me I need to re-prioritize my life (and He made that possible by helping us learn to budget and providing my husband with a new job he loves). On the days I work out of the house, I get up earlier to pray and squeeze a workout in and then move time in the word to a bit later in the afternoon. I have to stay flexible, but my heart is to put God first, then my husband, my family (I don’t have my own kids but my niece and brothers live with me), and work. Church and community fall in there as time and opportunity allows. Since I’ve been working less I have been able to involved more which is so much more fun that work!
4. Making time to be alone with my husband. We have a house full right now and we stay busy all week. We struggle finding time to be alone and intimate. It’s getting better but we could definitely use more alone time.
5. For me, choosing joy is letting the little things I once thought were the big things go.
