Podcast: Play in new window
Christy Wright is a Certified Business Coach, a Ramsey Personality and a straight-up girl boss. She is also a best selling author, wife and mom of two boys. Christy’s energy is infectious. She educates and gives hope to audiences nationwide, and in this episode we get an intimate one-on-one with this power house!
We talk about the business of coming up with a good business idea, what women should or should not start a business, the importance of believing in your product, and how to market your business around resolving a problem. And my favorite part? We talk about the importance of using your story to encourage others and offer support to you and your family.
Christy is passionate about helping women. You’ll agree as you hear Christy’s desire to empower women to step into their God-given gifts and create a movement of women who are making money doing what they love.
Even more fun? Listening to Christy talk about how she lives the girl boss life while managing the chaos at home. Christy acknowledges her laundry mountain but humbly declares it to be a place her boys will not remember. Christy reminds us to focus on where we are, to keep the main thing the main thing, and to take advantage of opportunities to be fully present.
My conversation with Christy is about what it means and what it takes to be a woman in business. If you need encouragement, practical business or life advice, you will learn something from this girl. Christy Wright is on fire! Listen up friend. You have the ability to run a business and be the girl boss you’ve always wanted to be!

Thanks for this great episode! I just recently started getting into listening to podcasts and finished my first couple of episodes of the Business Boutique podcast before you posted this one so it was perfect timing. 🙂
I work for myself from home as a freelance graphic designer and also run an Etsy shop were I sell my designs. I think my biggest struggle is loneliness. I also don’t have close girlfriends in this season of my life and even though I try to do what I can to get involved at church, I am often just simply by myself due to the nature of my work.
I think my strengths are my creative spirit and my willingness to do what it takes to get a job done and make sure the client is happy.
I am working on being more present by scheduling my day more. So currently, I have started a morning routine where I have about 30 minutes for prayer and quiet time then I spend a little bit of time planning my day and then I do my daily workout. This is a newer habit for me so I am still working on being consistent there then I will figure out a better routine for the rest of the day. I am also trying to only have one thing going at a time. It can be so easy to have a million things going on, even if it’s just several tabs on my internet browser, but it just makes my brain so crowded and chaotic. As a woman, I like to think that I can do a bunch of things all at once, but then I wonder, can I really do all those things well? The truth is, probably not.
Sounds great! Appreciate you listening. You’re the winner for a copy of Christy Wright’s book the Business Boutique. Please send your mailing address to chrystal@chrystalevanshurst.com
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! Looking forward to reading the book. 🙂
My current struggle is charging for my services.. I just started a house calls business in DFW and I feel guilty sometimes for charging and also finding the time to do and learn billing…
unique strength, I truly care for people and love being a nurse practitioner and visiting patients in their home, providing care and teaching parents how to manage their child’s illness.
Being Fully present is a current challenge.. I do find myself on my phone all day!! Between managing appointments and responding to emails… I love the idea of jus towing present where I am in the moment .. this was right on time!!
Thank you!!
As a full time 9 to 5 employee, I find it challenging to build your dream business at the same time. I know my purpose is outside of corporate America. So trying to find how to balance my time and resources until I can transition into full time entrepreneurship. Awesome podcast!
Thanks
My struggle is not having a steady input of students to tutor. I love teaching in all aspects not just academics but more so gods teachings intersecting with my learnings , and sharing this with those I come into contact with daily. I love the podcast and I love the input of art as I’ve been nvolved in painting in acrylics and watercolours and would love to try and sell some pieces, I also want to write and tell my life story. So there’s quite a lot I want to accomplish but facing cancer and separation at the same time has been a very painful journey. With regard to phone and demands of social media not there for me, I’m encouraged that my refusal in being caught up in this is what has kept me sane over the past 3 years. I’ve learnt to separate all else when I’m with my God, or when I’m painting, or gardening or teaching, or spending time with my kids or a friend or even a stranger. By doing this I’ve found more joy in the present, contentment in the moment, peace in the moment, in fact I can see better in every situation when I stay grounded for that task in that moment. I would love to read this book and begging that boss lady business!! Currently on disability.
My struggle is overcoming self doubt and if my voice really matters in the sea of other voices out there.
I’m new at running my own business, so there are several right now! Balance, and creating my daily tasks that will lead to a solid business foundation.
I LOVE to help people! And I love to share the knowledge that I’ve gleaned from research and experience…and that is now my job to HELP OTHERS.
I loved the tips she shared on being fully present. I think the biggest thing would be to set boundaries and to be OK with them, not to feel bad for not responding right away or being available to whomever is trying to get your attention at that moment.
I want to be successful to help my family. I want to be successful at being with my family. I believe, with the Lord, I can do BOTH! would LOVE this book – Christy is spot on with this topic and I look forward to gleaning more from her.
I loved this podcast. I just became a distributor for a whole food nutrition product and will be working my way to my own virtual franchise. So I would be considered “work from home.” Prior to taking this step, I have been job searching for approx. 9 mths.
I would say my biggest challenge is being lonely as well. Looking for work and getting rejection emails or no response tend to feed the loneliness. I have well over 15 years of HR experience alone which is why this is mind boggling. Perhaps being in the South is the issue. From NJ to NC is a bigggg difference.
What I bring to the marketplace is my unique personality. Through GOD’s gifting, I am an outgoing person and love to spend time with other women, helping/mentoring them in their walk with the LORD.
I love the name Business Boutique. Very intriguing ?
Hi Chrystal,
On the Girl Boss playlist, some of the songs only play a snippet and ends. Shoukd all the songs play in its entirety?
Thank you,
Mae
Hi Mae, are you listening in the Spotify app? Or on my site? The playlist on my site is only samples but if you go to the Spotify application either online or on a mobile device you can listen there. Let me know! If you are still having trouble send an email to chrystal@chrystalevanshurst.com
It amazes me how God speaks the same message to me through various people in a season. I have a full-time job however I have a entrepreneurial home-based business provider training to child-care providers and consultation to child-care directors. Did I say I’m also a pastor’s wife who leads our women’s ministry? Whew! That being said, my current struggle is lack of balance. I need to learn better ways to “do it all”. Or, maybe I need to apply the time management skills I already have. My unique strength is the passion I have for youth and children. I am constantly in learning mode to gain ways to help, come along side, encourage those who care for children rather parent or provider. I want to see us do a better job nurturing and grooming those little ones to become what God would have them be. Now, about being fully present. That’s where God has been speaking to me from every direction. I tend to veer off focus. There is so much to do that I don’t know where to begin and I get flustered and stressed. I just listened to a training on mindfulness, I heard about it on the focus on the family and now you and Christy are in my ear. I hear you God! I’ve decided to start small. I’m going to eat every meal at a table so I can be in the moment. I’m going to leave work at work and home at home. Look through the windshield more than the rear view mirror. Thanks and may God richly bless you both for speaking to me today.
I am an interior designer who is attempting to start my own business. The goal of the business is to use interior design to help people be able to Age In Place – to remain in their homes comfortable and safely as long as they are able. My initial clients have been more general interior design contracts such as kitchen and bath design. I began with friends and acquaintances and am starting to move outside of those circles now. I think my biggest struggle is believing that my work is worth the current going price for my services. I have had a “friend”who refused to pay me what I billed them, with claims of help they had given me in the past and how they had given ‘friend pricing’ discounts for their work, and I realize their undermining comments have seriously damaged my self-image and weakened my confidence. I love my work, but I hate doing the invoicing and finishing up the final details of a contract. It strikes fear in my heart.
The unique strength I bring to the marketplace is my compassionate caring nature which helps me understand the needs of my clients coupled with creativity and balance of function and beauty in design.
I try to balance this new business with being a pastor’s wife, involvement in leading worship, coordinating the nursery at church and teaching in our ESL outreach. I need to learn the skill of being fully present to the task at hand.
I love your heart Susan! Praying that you will grow to believe in your value and that God would send others in your path who affirm your worth.
I think your concept is brilliant, Susan, very needed, and definitely something many would be eager to pay for if it meant their loved ones or themselves could remain in their homes longer! I’ve never heard of anyone doing this before. My mom has Parkinson’s so my family is dealing with these issues now. Perhaps you could develop relationships with some Home Health providers to find clients and learn more about what needs clients are grappling with still in our age of ever-increasing technology.
As for your fee, I’ve heard that you (and those who refer you) should always quote your regular standing rate (per hour, project, whatever) so everyone is clear about the value of the service. If you want to give a discount to someone personally, that is your prerogative and should be no one else’s decision or assumption. It does NOT change your rate. Also, discounting your rate too often reduces the value perception of your service. I am excited for you!
Hi Chrystal,
First let me say that I love your heart – I recently started following you and listening to your podcast when I saw that you interviewed Katharine Wolf, who I deeply respect. Every time I see a post on IG or hear your podcast your heart is right where I want to go – so thank you for putting yourself out there!!!!
I am currently stepping back to 2 days a week from a job that has had me all over the place in my company – from just a Monday thru Friday office job that you forget about at the end of the day, to an analyst of the business with my hands and head in everything, to a director of operations… I am stepping back to refocus on my physical and spiritual health – to have a little margin to do so and to think through with my 28 year old, Brain Cancer surviving daughter how we could start a business that brings us an income and more joy in our journey. The struggle I am in right now is first to not want to solve the business thing first rather than keep my two main goals primary – because, you know, business is just so much more acceptable, explainable and justifiable. So in short to believe that the first two goals are primary and worth pursuing FIRST.
The unique strength I have is seeing to the root of things. ( I loved how Christy described herself in this podcast) Sometimes I like to say life doesn’t wear very many clothes for me… What I mean is that even when I don’t want to, I find myself looking at the packaging and seeing the roots. In business this allows me to get quickly to the issue at the heart of things and solve the real problem and move on, rather than getting distracted by solving things that aren’t the real problem.
For me, being fully present is easy with some people – like my grand children and my daughter, who are just joys to me and everything they do and say is fascinating – plus I know they feel the same about me. That is the crux – I find myself using social media, or books etc to hide behind with people who I am not so sure of. So, being present is going to require me to be a little braver, to put myself out there without a guarantee of enjoyment.
Hi thanks for the post. As a single mom I fear the time it will take to adequately start up a successful business. I would really like to do something where I work from home and have a flexible schedule so I can do all I need to as a mom while still providing for my children. Because of this, I am looking for examples in other women who have similar stories and still succeeded. I am hoping this will encourage, inspire, and enlighten me on my our journey. Thank you again for the post.
