Podcast: Play in new window
Have you ever found yourself reflecting on your parenting and wondering if your kids will turn out okay? Do you wonder if you’re doing a good job being a mom?
Parenting is an adventure–that’s for sure. This adventure can be crazy, difficult, or exhilarating, and oftentimes it can be all three in one day (or one hour depending on how everyone is feeling). But one thing is for sure, it takes skill to parent, and from time to time all of us will question whether or not we have what it takes.
Ginger Hubbard joins me on today’s podcast to chat about what intentional parenting looks like in today’s culture. Ginger, the author of Don’t Make Me Count to Three, shares wisdom about addressing the heart of a child and not merely their behavior. Ginger also gives honest and practical steps for the days we just “blow it” as parents! On the journey of raising children, some days we just “miss the boat.” Parents are humans too — humans in need of the same grace we extend to our children.
Ginger also compares being a parent to getting a new appliance. We think we know how everything works, but when we need help, there’s a manual. Even though children may not come with literal instructions, we have access to God at all times. Family was God’s idea, which means that we can trust Him to show us how to care for our own.

I felt really convicted after listening to this. I have three girls 6,4 and 2, and had fallen into asking derogatory questions and yet being disgusted with myself for treating them poorly. I feel like there is a cultural pressure from my mom, aunties, and the lady at the grocery store 🙂 for my girls to be super respectful. Church is the worse. I have had so many comments to the affect of how my girls should act. But I fell into the trap of also caring way too much about my image. This in turned allowed me to let them be crazy at home just be perfect at church especially so I would often berate them. This has opened my eyes to the idea of actually training them in righteousness. Reaching their heart and not being worried about my image (yes I know my self-worth and identity is in Christ, just not when the first lady of the church is looking) And the concept of grace and seeing them as a sinner and love the practical ways of prepping them before hand. Thank you Chrystal and Ginger for an engaging conversation and for reaching my heart.
This is right where I am in my parenting journey. Just when I thought I was completely off track, this podcast let me know I’m doing better than I thought. Ha! Thank God for the encouragement provided through you two wonderful ladies.
