Podcast: Play in new window
Today, I chat with Mary DeMuth – a raw, genuine, and beautiful soul who has tasted deeply of pain and even deeper of redemption.
Mary shares her She’s Still There story with us, and even though she has experienced unimaginable trauma, she has emerged with a passion for healing, wholeness, and using brokenness to further God’s kingdom.
After a difficult childhood of divorce, sexual abuse, drugs, and instability, Mary remembers feeling like she only existed to be abused and neglected. But in ninth grade, Mary met Jesus at YoungLife camp, and she began finding freedom and purpose from her pain.
Mary and I talk about how our most painful stories can become our most powerful ministry, how our healing can lead others to their healing, and how sometimes discovering the girl in you means unearthing the parts of you you’d rather forget.
We tackle difficult questions like:
- How do you practically use your story to help others with theirs?
- What does it look like to extend forgiveness? And to keep forgiving?
- How do we grab hold of hope when we only see brokenness?
- What are good indicators that it may be time to seek counseling for our past?
I hope you enjoy my conversation with Mary as much as I did. She is a curator of poetic and honest words, and she is unafraid to face the hard parts of healing.

Chrystal, I’m so grateful for God putting this in your heart. These podcasts are continuely showing me that I’m not alone in the many struggles I have had in life. Please keep me in your prayers. I should’ve written a book by now. I’m just starting to write again. May God continue to bless you and your family in all things.
No you are not alone! And yes! Write!
My goodness, another winner. I can think of a few more people right now who need to know they are a multi-dimensional vessel, not just a human being or a human “doing.” Thanks again for sharing another podcast that will only get better with time…
Are there transcripts of the podcasts?
No… I’m sorry. One day I’ll be able to do that but not there yet 🙂
Since becoming a believer I have believed and desired that the Lord’s intention in allowing some of the abuses in my early life has been in order to bring comfort and healing to others. I hadn’t known how to take it further than whomever I might talk with that ends up having similar things in their lives-freeing them to talk about it. My life has taken a strange turn in the last several years where I am alone a lot yet feel that details of my daily life-details not shared in a format like this or on social media-are known. It is believing I have an audience that I don’t see in a sense. This is both a positive and negative thing. The escapism into fantasy and reading of fiction that had been my coping mechanism my entire life now feels on display without my revealing it willfully, as well as random details of my life seem known even when I am silent about them. While causing feelings all over the board from being triggered to when this started, it drives me to see what seems to be made fun of and how interactions with me are seeming manipulated everywhere I go. It is a mocking spirit largely, yet there are some that seem less so and perhaps people want to see growth and victory in my life. Good therapists are not easy to find, by the way and can do more harm than good in trusting and searching. I find there is so much available via internet for how to gain perspective plus with extensive writing and trusting God and what His Word says has helped more than paying someone to ask me what I want to talk about or worse to seem they are a part of a negative construct against my growth. My perspective now has been that I want to present things in my voice so that whatever it is that is somehow networked about me not based on what I have made public can be compared with what I actually present publicly. It is easy to handle a negative response to something actually put out there, not so easy when you are speculating at both how someone knows something not made public or shared with any confidante and could be an errant thought that would pass and not mean anything and seeing that it doesn’t seem to be understood or respected in context. All of that has affected relationships as I am convinced of a networking about my life and pretty much it involves everyone I trusted denying it is occurring, telling me I dont matter enough for people to care, etc. If this is to be the norm of life now, I seek to know how to use it as it seems people gain access to these details by somehow being unkind or false directly to me first. From this podcast I am considering if visiting those places where harm occurred would be beneficial, declaring victory over the ground the enemy thought he gained, or if doing this in spirit/mind alone is enough. That’s a prayer for me. That and how to best move in presenting my story and in discovering what my true gifts are/how to use them to heal others not just bring myself comfort. I rarely have heard of the ladies you have on your podcasts; however, I am always encouraged as at least one idea has to do with a current question I have going on inside w/each one I listen to! Thanks again.
